Super Easy Cuban Guava Pastelito

This recipe is SUPER SUPER easy and QUICK!

If you love Cuban pastelitos (pastries), you’re going to love this simple recipe with only 3 ingredients!


INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 Egg, beaten with 1 Tablespoon of water and 1 Tablespoon of sugar
  • Guava Paste (Iberia!)
  • Greenwise Publix Frozen Puff Pastry (comes with two sheets)
  • Simple syrup (1 cup of white sugar, 1 cup of water)

That’s it! (Yields: 9 pastries)


DIRECTIONS:

To begin, you’re going to want to let your frozen pastry sheets thaw for about 15-20 minutes (do not attempt to unfold them prior because they will crack! If they crack, use some water to seal any cracks).

  • Preheat your oven at 400 degrees, and line a baking sheet with aluminum foil (the guava will spill out a little, and this can be hard to clean up because it’s so sticky!).
  • Boil simple simple sugar ingredients until sugar is dissolved, and then remove from heat
  • Open your guava paste package, and cut them into 1/4 inch thick slices. You’re going to need two slices per pastry, so 18 total.
  • Once your pastelito is thawed enough to work with, open one of them flat on your baking sheet. You will notice that the pastelito has two lines (creases) from where it was folded, use those as your guides to sizing your pastries.
  • Now, begin assembling the guava (2 slices per square). Remember, you’re going to be making 9, so spread them apart equally and evenly.
  • Once you have done that, get your other pastry sheet, and place it over the one with guava on it, make sure the creases on both pastry sheets are lining up so you can use it as a guide for cutting it.
  • Then, you are going to follow the creases with a butter knife, and cut them all the way. Then, cut them the same exact way, but from the other side so you are creating 9 squares!
  • Then, you are going to cut 3 slices into each pastelito to create a vent.
  • After that has been completed, take your beaten egg mixture, and coat each square.
  • Pop them in the oven for 15 minutes, or until golden.
  • Brush simple syrup on each pastelito
  • Let cool for 30 minutes, and enjoy your pastelitos!

These go great with Cuban coffee or cafe con leche!
